Vista ’17-The Annual Business Summit of IIMB
Vista, the annual business summit of IIMB & one of the largest B-school summits in India, is a plenitude of finance, marketing, consulting, operations human resources, public policy and a lot more. The 2017 edition of Vista was scheduled from 22nd-24th September. Every year during Vista, the lush green campus and stone brick walls of IIMB welcome almost 15000 participants.
Students from Student Media Cell (SMC)of IIMB provide us with a detailed summary of events taking place in those three days.
Vista 2017 â Day 1

The IIMB campus was decked up with beautiful lights, posters and the âmake a wish treeâ stood in a corner. Some people were looking enthusiastically for wishes that they could fulfil whereas others rushed to the auditorium and classes so as not to miss the start of the grand event. The auditorium was jampacked with people eagerly waiting for the start of one of the biggest business fests in the nation. Vista 2017, is defined by the theme âImagine, Disrupt, Repeatâ which stands for the creative disruptions that we encounter in the field of business. Organized in collaboration with several important industry bodies such as JSW, Strategy&, American Express, White Owl, Ninjacart, BSE and Akshaya Patra, Vista is all set to be one of the most fascinating fests with its diverse array of events and workshops.
The event started with a welcome note by the director, Prof. G Raghuram. After that Mr. Madan Padaki gave an intriguing session on what could creative disruptions mean and how they had the potential to transform the lives of people. He bombarded the audience with several questions like âWhat is the biggest challenge that our country faces? âand âWhat is the size of the workforce in India?â. All of them led to one answer, we need to create more jobs in this country. He talked about an interesting experiment that almost stunned the audience. He worked with a team that managed to train kids from rural backgrounds without any education to become BPO employees in merely 1000 hours. One of them, Ramesh also went ahead to win the award for CNN heroes. He aligned Vistaâs theme of creative disruptions with this concept of transforming the jobs market in our country. He persuaded the audience to be a job creator and not a job seeker. Post this the FII secretary, Priyanka Rao welcomed the crowd and thanked everyone for joining Vista. All in all, Vista started with the right message by motivating everyone in the crowd to build a better country as we continue to disrupt the old and bring in the new.
The first day of Vista had a line of interesting talks and events. Two eminent speakers, Mr. Shiv Khera and Mr. Arun Maira delivered talks which drew large number of people. Mr. Arun Maira talked about leading and transforming the art of listening. He has recently authored a book called “Learning for Well-Being: Conversation with People Not Like Us”. He mentioned how people are alone because of the internet and are becoming less empathetic towards each other. Mr. Khera on the other hand emphasized on three skills necessary for a successful career: people skills, prioritization and persuasion skills.
The events for the day had everything: from solving social problems to discovering successful startup ideas, creating smart cities and tapping the potential of women in the corporate world. In the life challenge, teams started on a 36-hour hackathon to solve the most challenging social and environmental issues based on sustainability goals defined by UN. There were issues like clean energy, transportation, education and menstrual hygiene. The event is organized by TGELF (the global education and leadership foundation) and the teams must come up with a working solution and are also being assisted by mentors. The final round of Bzzwings was held and 6 teams presented their startup ideas. The startups were on multiple concepts like a cane for the blind, an automated waste segregation dustbin and a pen to mark bubbles quickly on the OMR sheet during an exam. The winners were the team âTorch-itâ and they designed a cane for the blind with sensors that warns the person by vibrating as he approaches an obstacle. This event had unique ideas and at the end of it NSRCEL gave an option for incubation to all the 6 startups.
The end of day one was marked by the much-awaited Comedy Night performed by Aravind SA. Once again, the auditorium was jampacked and he had everyone laughing with his witty and brilliant jokes. Right from Tinder to the North- South divide, he cracked jokes on everything and the audience walked out thoroughly entertained. The day has come to an end, and bigger events await us tomorrow. There is Model United Nations, Numer Uno, Markguru and talks by Mr. Ashish Vidhyarthi and Ms. Sagarika Ghose to look forward to. The day one could not have been better and we are certain about an even more exciting day tomorrow!

Vista 2017 â Day 2

The second day of IIM Bangaloreâs International Business Summit, Vista, carried on the vigor from the eventful first day with impactful speeches from diverse set of speakers and business leaders, corporate conclave, exciting workshops and events. The enthusiasm on this day was higher than the first day with final rounds for various events scheduled and also evident from all the wishes of âMake a wish treeâ being fulfilled with a day to spare. Delivering on the promise of its theme âCreative Disruptionâ, there was no dearth of knowledge flow throughout the campus as attendees lined up for the numerous proceedings.
The Speaker Series for the day was kicked off by the inspiring talk from Ms. Poonam Mahajan, Member of Parliament, Lok Sabha, who conversed on the âcreative disruptionâ in politics. She left everyone mesmerized with her dynamism and thoughts on transformational ideas. Next in the line was the national award winning actor Mr. Ashish Vidhyarthi who talked about âwho are we beyond the many roles we playâ. Being the founder of Avid Miner and a prolific speaker he focused his talk on how to âstand out and be heard”. He stressed on learning and said, “Be the hungry hunter learner, be the Vidhyarthi”. His talk today has surely inspired a lot of students to embark on the journey of learning and stand out of the crowd. The last talk of the speaker series was by a very imminent speaker Ms. Sagarika Ghose, the famous journalist and news anchor, consulting editor at Times of India and author who brought in her experience of excellent debating skills. Young Leadership Summit also gathered a lot of participants from various B-schools. Prof. Rakesh Godhwani, Professor of Communication for Leaders at IIM Bangalore, gave a motivational speech to shape the young minds of the future leaders. The speaker series inspired students to think outside the box and to âImagine. Disrupt. Repeatâ.
The day also held the final rounds for various events where participants showcased their skills in order to woo the judges and bag the title of winner. âBidwiserâ â a strategy focused game that tested the capability of participants to think on their feet was one such event. Others include, âMarkguruâ where students were required to put on their thinking caps and bring out their strategic creativity to solve the marketing case competition to win the title of Markguru in the biggest business fest of the nation. Students from various colleges like IIMs, ISB etc. put in a lot of effort in order to become the best in the country. While the winners got to celebrate their victory and take a winning prize home, others got the opportunity to learn from the best talent and teams across the country.
A social impact event âSparshâ helped the young leaders put themselves in the shoes of the NGO owners and counter the day-to-day challenges faced by them. The flagship event of Vista, âNumero Unoâ looked for the CEO of the future in the present-day students as they fought to the tooth to prove their mettle.
Two day-long events, Model United Nations by Public Policy Club of IIM Bangalore needed students to step into the shoes of ambassadors of countries that were members of the UN. They served as delegates and prepared draft resolution, plot strategy, negotiated with supporters and adversaries in order to solve current world problems. tGELF Life Challenge, was also one of the major events that kept the attendees intrigued throughout the day. The participants got to brainstorm and build their wisdom as they took on some of the bigger problems of the society and industries.
Many other events with on-spot registrations saw a lot of participation. The major ones include “Retailer“, âOptimusâ, âAround the B in 90 minâ, âComic Stripâ and âWordictâ.Â
As dusk fell, the day ended on a high with wonderful music performance by Dhwani, mesmerizing dance performance by Taal, and captivating drama performance by Kaleidoscope. It served as the perfect ending to a day filled with interesting and intellectual interactions. The penultimate day of Vista prodigiously perpetuated from the previous day and set up great expectations for its final day tomorrow on this lush campus of IIM Bangalore which was now brimming with the talent of the future.

Vista 2017 â Day 3

Vista, the annual business summit of IIM Bangalore, continued onto its third and final day with the same vigour and excitement of the previous days with a wide assortment of events, speaker series and workshops.
The second day concluded with the Corporate Conclave, the flagship panel discussion by visionary leaders of some of the biggest organizations across the globe. The panellists included KBS Anand, the MD & CEO of Asian Paints, Ms. Sheelika Ravishankar, Jedi Master – Marketing and Outreach, Team Indus and Dr. Raman Venkatesh, CEO-Technology and Corporate Development, Eureka Forbes. The speakers discussed the need for disruptive innovation across fields. They also emphasised the importance of potable water in the current political and economic environment.
The final day saw the conclusion of Numero Uno, one of the flagship events of Vista. The competition tested contestants on various managerial fronts to bring out the future leaders in them. Jyotsna Mehta of ISB Hyderabad emerged as the winner while Gian Marco Brizzolara, of IIM Ahmedabad was the runner-up.

he key speaker of the day was Jessica Lynn, a transgender advocate and activist. She spoke at length about her life and her struggles as a transgender, her decision to undergo a sex reassignment surgery and the discrimination she faced after.
There was also a panel discussion on the importance of the accountability of social service organizations, with Mr. Ganesh R, CFO of Akshaya Patra Foundation, Prof. G Raghuram, Director of IIM Bangalore and Ms. Richa Valecha, a PGPPM student of IIM Bangalore discussing the strategies employed by Akshaya Patra Foundation and the challenges they face in achieving their mission of making sure no child is deprived of education because of hunger. They highlighted how their emphasis on operational efficiency along with a public-private partnership model enabled the foundation in serving 2 billion meals in 2016 while achieving zero fatal cases in 17 years of their operation. They stressed on the importance of NGOs publishing their annual financial statements to increase their credibility. The event concluded with the unveiling of âIllumineâ, the 2016-17 annual report of Akshaya Patra.
The Young Leaders Summit also concluded on the third day with Sravan Krishnan, an animal activist, speaking on peaceful coexistence with animals. Model United Nations, a two-day authentic simulation of the UN General Assembly, Security Council and other multilateral bodies that introduced the students to the intricacies of diplomacy, negotiation and decision making also concluded on day three.
Street Smart, the valuation competition that tested the participantsâ depth of understanding of the industry and the firms, the reasons for M&A, their methodology of evaluating the target/acquiring firms among other things saw Rishab Jain, Tushar Puthussery and Yatharth Chaturvedi of ISB Hyderabad walk away with honours while Krupesh Shah and Shekhar Gupta of IIM Kashipur, and Raghu Ram Ambati, Rachitha S and Gouthami Nagammagari of IIM Bangalore coming as joint runners-up.
Milestone, an operations and strategy event that had students play the role of Operation Managers that required them to analyze challenging scenarios, formulate operations related strategic decisions on real-time problems faced by firms in their business. Team Prim comprising of Abhishek Dixit from IIM Calcutta, emerged as the winner while Team Illuminatis comprising of Kunal and Bharat Balegere from IIM Bangalore were the runners-up.
Bizarre, the unconventionally thought-provoking business quiz event, was helmed by quizmaster Major Chandrakant Nair. The candidates faced a variety of questions across sectors.
The day also saw various other events including Dynamark, Milestone, Stock 20-20, Hire To Conquer, Qriosity, 60 Seconds to fame and Optimus. Dynamark, the case competition, tested the participants on real-life marketing scenarios. Stock 20-20 saw participants expertly analyzing various public stocks to determine investment opportunities. Qriosity, the general quiz of the fest, covered a wide variety of non-business-related topics. 60 seconds to fame pushed the participants to the best of their oratory skills. Optimus, the live operations simulation game, put participants in the shoes of a senior manager fighting a live battle against the odds to prevent the organization from getting disrupted.
The curtains fell on Vista with a DJ night sponsored by Red FM and with the launch of Unmaad 2018, the annual cultural festival of IIM Bangalore. Vista â17 had something for everyone to look forward to throughout the three days of the summit. As it drew to a close, it left behind a strong and profound impact on the entire student community to identify a new world of opportunities and leave an imprint on the society at large.

Twaran â17
This year, Twaran took place on campus on 2nd October and continued till 8th of this month. It is a run conducted by âVikasanaâ, the IIMB studentsâ social service society, in collaboration with IIMBâs Alumni Committee and Sports Committee, to raise funds. The funds raised through this initiative are then donated to an NGO. This event was well attended by alumni, faculty and students alike, thereby giving everyone a platform to bond and network.
Twaran â17 â Daan Utsav (2nd October â 8th October)

3 am, October 2nd, 2017. With the skies pouring, the WhatsApp group consisting of the organizing committee of Twaran (representatives from Vikasana, Alumni Committee, Sports Council) was buzzing with apprehensions if the skies will clear to make way for Twaran, which was scheduled to start at 7 am. As good things will always find a way to happen, the skies cleared at 4 am, giving a huge relief to the coordinators who managed a mere 2-hour sleep to start prepping for the event. As optimistic as this sounds, this is something that changed into a tradition every year. It pours until the launch of Twaran, and the skies clear up just in time, making way for the run to begin, kicking off Daan Utsav (Joy of Giving Week) here at IIMB.
Twaran was conceptualized with the idea to kick-off Daan Utsav (Joy of Giving Week) on a positive, active and enthusiastic note. The contributions from the alumni, faculty, and students help fulfill the need of a deserving NGO every year, which is selected by Vikasana, the social impact club of IIM Bangalore.
The funds raised through Twaran â17, with its tagline â #RunForACause, is to be donated to Angels Orphanage, at Shivaji Nagar, which is home to around fifty abandoned children, which includes twenty girls. The money raised is to be utilized by the home for basic infrastructure needs. What better than have the kids of this home as the guest of honour for this event, with fifteen of them participating in the 5 km run and successfully finishing it? Pretty impressive indeed!
But what is it that ties the IIMB family for this noble cause? For a few alumni, it is a chance to relive the memories they took away from this campus. For a few others, it was an opportunity to bring their friends and family so that they can experience why this place is special to them. For a few faculty, it was their way of showing solidarity to the cause. For a few others, this was a double bonanza, running for the cause as a faculty and as an alumnus of this prestigious institution. For a few students like us, it was our chance to push the limits and test our declining fitness levels and get a chance to experience the contagious happiness that the smiles of the children bring. However, we must admit, the most enthusiastic participants were the alumni who were a part of AlumCom, Vikasana or Sports Council during their stay here, as they relate to every drop of sweat that goes behind the preparation for this dear cause!
With our very own international students coming on exchange winning the 10 km run in the men’s category every year, as a twist of tradition, it was a proud moment when our PGP1 – Sudarshan Iyer came first pushing our very own Dean, Prof. Sourav Mukherji to finish second. Mukesh Hegde bagged the third place. In the women’s 10 km category, Manon Pietri finished first while Soni Sultania finished second. Anisha Grover and Sapna tied for the third place. In the 5 km category, Krishna came first, while Liba and Pawan Kartik finished second and third respectively. In the 5 km men’s category, Sachin Meena, Pranjal Chandrakar and Parag Dhol bagged the first, second and third position respectively. Exchange students ruled the women’s 5 km run category bagging the gold and silver, as Anais CorrĂ©a came first, Clarisse Cadet came second and Amrita Yadav came third.
On the D-day, as Vikasana members coordinated the event and its proceedings with the Angels Orphanage, Sports Council led with the layout design for the run, providing medical aid and getting the certificates and fancy medals ready for the winners. AlumCom handled all the registrations for the event with a lot of surprise registrations, including our Director Prof. G. Raghuram, registering on-the-spot and completing the 5km run in style!
“Despite being tired at the end of the run, our participants interacted with the kids with enthusiasm and love, and requested us to send them the invite for next year once it was finalized! Seeing the participants beaming with joy while they collect the âSmileâ stickers, we sure did feel, the purpose of Daan Utsav was being fulfilled, at every moment of the event!”, Bhuvana Jagan, Senior Coordinator, Vikasana said.

s the run saw huge participation, there was another competition of sorts going on amongst the enthusiastic ones who gave it their all, yet were left gasping for breath halfway. As all of them competed to play the drums, it was a delight to watch them fight to cheer other participants. An absolute contentment for most of us for whom this run was just a stark reminder about our fitness levels!
Amritha Prakash, Senior Coordinator, Alumni Committee, voiced out – “Interacting with our alumni, it was heartening to see that they were willing to donate despite not being able to make it to the event. What was interesting this year, is that our alumni were extra enthusiastic and were already enquiring about Twaran, even before the invite emails were sent out! We are grateful to our alumni for their overwhelming response. My favorite part of Twaran was that, it was lovely to watch a few alumni run along with their kids in the 5 km marathon after finishing their 10km!”
We at IIMB are incredibly grateful for the donations that poured in from multiple quarters â faculty, alumni, students, friends, friends of friends and so on. Irrespective of whether they could participate in the run or not, our IIMBians (of the past, present or future) continue to make us proud by extending their support!

Sammantran ’17 – EPGP’S Flagship Event
EPGP 2017-18 of IIMB organized the 4th chapter of their flagship event âSammantranâ on 17th Sept 2017. The summit- themed on âIndia Inc. â Shifting Gearsâ, was tailored with major events like keynote speaker sessions and panel discussions. The event took place at the IIMB auditorium from 9.30 am.
This event aimed to provide students and executives with the opportunity to interact with the best minds in industry and academia, and also to discuss current and future trends and opportunities in Indiaâs ever-evolving business environment. Through the confluence of the most diversified and cultivated minds of industry and academia, Sammantran presented a canvas of Indian and global industry environment and trends.
The discussions included topics like Digital Supply Chain Systems, Industrial Internet of Things and Automation, and Advantage India: Tax and Investment Reforms.
“India is an evolving economy and the contribution of the automotive industry in the country’s economy is immense. India is now the world’s largest two-wheeler market and world’s fifth largest automotive market,” said Malo Le Masson, Head – Global Product & Planning, Hero MotoCorp Ltd., in his keynote address at the conclave.
