IIMB Research on Sustainable Farming Wins Global Innovation Policy Award

A research study by IIM Bangalore has been recognised with the Babbage Industrial Innovation Policy Award 2026 from the Industry Studies Association. The study, co-authored by doctoral alumnus Dr. Subhankar Saha, now at Ahmedabad University, and Prof. Haritha Saranga, Chairperson of the IIMB Sustainability Taskforce, focuses on advancing sustainable agricultural practices in India.

Titled Implementing a Comprehensive Intervention to Promote Sustainable Agricultural Practices in India, the paper addresses the ongoing challenge of crop residue burning in Punjab. It highlights how economic, technological, and institutional barriers limit farmers’ ability to adopt sustainable alternatives.

Using satellite-based fire data, census information, and farmer surveys, the study evaluates the impact of coordinated, multi-stakeholder interventions. The findings demonstrate that such approaches can significantly reduce environmental harm while also improving farmers’ economic outcomes, offering valuable insights for policymakers working on scalable sustainability solutions.
