IIM Bangalore and King’s College London Launch Collaborative Research on UK-India Trade

IIM Bangalore (IIMB) and King’s College London (KCL), alongside the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI), recently hosted a conference in New Delhi titled “UK-India Trade: Small Firms and Global Ambitions.” This event showcased findings from their three-year research project, “Enablers and Obstacles to UK-India Trade,” which explores the challenges and opportunities faced by Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), particularly in the Indian handicrafts sector.
The study, funded by the UK Economic and Social Research Council and the Indian Council of Social Science Research, highlights the potential of India’s handwoven carpet industry. It emphasizes the need for better market linkages, export assistance, and innovation to enhance competitiveness. Key findings suggest that while access to credit is important, stronger social networks and market connections are critical for these small firms. The project aims to strengthen India-UK trade relations, particularly in handicrafts and textiles, fostering job creation and sustainable growth in the sector. The next conference leg will take place at IIM Jammu, focusing on evolving handicraft industries.
