Dr. Deepak Malghan Honored with TN Khoshoo Memorial Award for Outstanding Achievements in Ecological Economics
Dr. Deepak Malghan, a distinguished faculty member in the Public Policy domain at IIM Bangalore, was honored with the TN Khoshoo Memorial Award by the Ashoka Trust for Research in Ecology and the Environment (ATREE). The award ceremony, part of the 20th T N Khoshoo Memorial Award and Lecture on ‘The Economics of Biodiversity,’ took place at the Bangalore International Centre on November 30, 2023. ATREE praised Dr. Malghan’s multifaceted and ingenious contributions to ecological economics, ranging from addressing the eco-economic equilibrium to pioneering approaches for tackling urban spatial inequalities. A chemical engineer and ecological economist, Prof. Malghan has previously been recognized with the 2015 VKRV Rao Prize in Social Sciences for his groundbreaking work in scale theory. Serving as an editor at Ecological Economics from 2018 to 2023, his impactful applied environmental policy research focuses on urban hydrology challenges.
EPGP Team Emerges Victorious in the Second Edition of ‘Ace the Case’ Competition Hosted by Persistent Systems
The EPGP team, named Team NMK and comprising Aman Jain, Ayush Akhoury, and Harsh Choudhary, students of the Executive Post Graduate Programme in Management (EPGP) at IIM Bangalore, secured victory in the second edition of the ‘Ace the Case’ competition hosted by Persistent Systems. This one-year full-time MBA program at IIM Bangalore has consistently produced remarkable talents. The competition, featuring four challenging levels, invited participation from students pursuing similar courses at renowned institutions like IIM Ahmedabad, IIM Calcutta, IIM Lucknow, IIM Indore, IIM Kozhikode, Indian School of Business, and XLRI Jamshedpur. IIM Lucknow and IIM Calcutta claimed the first and second runner-up positions, respectively. Persistent Systems, recognized as a Digital Engineering and Enterprise Modernization partner, organizes the competition to elicit innovative recommendations for societal benefit.
Research Paper Co-Authored by PhD Student Chinmay Divekar Accepted for Publication in the Journal of the Royal Statistical Society
The paper, titled ‘Real-time forecasting within soccer matches through a Bayesian lens,’ co-authored by Chinmay Divekar, a doctoral student in the Decision Sciences area at IIM Bangalore, along with Dr. Soudeep Deb of IIMB and Prof. Rishideep Roy of the University of Essex, has been accepted for publication in the Journal of the Royal Statistical Society: Series A (ABDC: A). The research introduces a Bayesian methodology in a unique framework for real-time prediction of soccer match outcomes, utilizing sequential event data. Evaluation with English Premier League data over eight seasons demonstrates the model’s superior performance compared to competing statistical or Machine Learning algorithms, validated through diverse scenarios in robustness checks.
Anant Ashutosh Sharma, PGP Student, Clinches Two Bronze Medals in Lawn Bowls at the 37th National Games Goa 2023
In a notable accomplishment, Anant Ashutosh Sharma, a second-year student enrolled in IIM Bangalore’s two-year full-time MBA program, the Post Graduate Programme in Management (PGP), secured two bronze medals in Lawn Bowls at the 37th National Games Goa 2023. Competing for Delhi, he excelled in both the Men’s Triple Event and Men’s Single Event categories. The prestigious National Games, inaugurated by the Honorable Prime Minister of India, featured 43 different sports and drew participation from 28 states. Anant Ashutosh Sharma contributed to the success of the Delhi Lawn Bowls team, which included gold and silver medalists from the Commonwealth Birmingham 2022. This achievement underscores IIM Bangalore’s commitment to providing holistic education and a supportive environment for its students.

The award recognizes her advanced research paper presentation titled ‘Adjusting to Covariate Shock: Tiding the Covid-19 Waves in India,’ co-authored with Prof. Arnab Mukherji from IIMB’s Public Policy area. The study, using high-frequency longitudinal data, explores the pandemic’s impact on household finances, revealing disproportionate effects on lower-income households and shedding light on coping mechanisms.
