Prof. Srivardhini K. Jha Advances Product Diversification Research in Social Enterprises

On September 10, 2024, IIM Bangalore’s Prof. Srivardhini K. Jha, in collaboration with Prof. Nachiket Bhawe from UNC Pembroke, published a groundbreaking paper titled “Context-driven Diversification in Social Enterprises” in Business & Society. This research delves into the critical, yet often neglected, role of context in the diversification strategies of social enterprises (SEs).

The study identifies two distinct context-driven diversification strategies: market development diversification (MDD) and market functioning diversification (MFD). By employing a mixed-method approach that includes qualitative interviews and a longitudinal database of Indian microfinance firms, the research reveals that while MFD positively influences financial growth, MDD significantly enhances social impact.

This work contributes vital insights to the product diversification literature, emphasizing the importance of contextual factors in shaping effective strategies for social enterprises, ultimately helping them achieve financial sustainability while maximizing social impact.
