PhD Scholar’s Research Shines at Global Consumer Research Conference

Midhila K S, a doctoral scholar in Marketing at IIM Bangalore, presented her research at the Association of Consumer Research Conference 2024 in Paris. Her study, “Midnight for Cinderella: For Whom Does the Underdog Narrative Work?”, explored the complexities of the underdog effect in brand narratives.

The research reveals a paradox: while underdog stories foster strong consumer identification, brands that outgrow this narrative risk being perceived as inauthentic, adversely affecting purchase intentions. These findings urge brand managers to carefully assess the relevance of underdog positioning to avoid negative outcomes.

Midhila’s participation highlights IIMB’s vibrant research culture and its global academic contributions.
