IIM Bangalore Establishes India’s First Private Equity Centre of Excellence with Rs 17.5 Crore Donation from Alumnus Mathew Cyriac

The Indian Institute of Management Bangalore (IIMB) is set to establish the country’s first private equity centre of excellence within an academic institution, funded by alumnus Mathew Cyriac (PGP 1994), Executive Chairman of Florintree Advisors. Cyriac, a former co-head of private equity for Blackstone India, is contributing Rs 17.5 crore to this initiative, marking the largest single alumni donation received by IIMB.

The funding will be used for establishing the centre, a chair professorship, scholarships, and naming four classrooms after former IIMB professors Prakash G Apte, Prasanna Chandra, S Sundararajan, and George Varughese. Cyriac envisions the centre as a global hub for research and education in private equity, fostering collaboration among academics, practitioners, and regulators to nurture PE talent.

Named the ‘Tony James Centre for Private Equity and Venture Capital at IIMB’ in honor of Hamilton Evans ‘Tony’ James, former President and Executive Vice-Chairman of Blackstone, the centre aims to bridge the gap in industry-academia collaboration and research on private equity’s impact on Indian businesses.

Cyriac noted that while high-visibility deals in private equity attract attention, there is a lack of in-depth research and educational programs focused on this field in Indian business schools. The centre will address this gap by focusing on research, highlighting private equity’s positive impact on the Indian economy, and engaging with industry participants, including general and limited partners, as well as regulators and businesses. It will also develop case studies and training modules related to private equity investing and host global PE leaders.

Tony James expressed his support, emphasizing private equity’s significant contribution to India’s economy by providing entrepreneurs with essential equity capital. He looks forward to collaborating with IIMB to build the centre into a world-class institution.
